Breakfast of Champions, er, Mayors: Sausage, Coke, & Coffee October 18, 2009

I’m at the Virginia Municipal League’s Mayors Institute this weekend at the beautiful Roanoke Hotel and Conference Center.  The conversation and interaction is exciting – 35+ mayors and vice mayors from around the Commonwealth.  I was happy to be given time yesterday to talk about our Harrisonburg Summits and the National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation.

This morning, we had a “continental breakfast”: muffins, sausage biscuits, coffee, water, Coke, Diet Coke, and Sprite.  That’s it!  No juice, fruit, etc.  The other option, of course, is a paid breakfast at the restaurant, but I cut it too close for that.  I know many professionals frequently find themselves at conferences and hotels, and I’m wondering if anyone has tips for how to eat healthy when the options your given aren’t!  I bet we all have that challenge from time to time.  Next time you’re on a planning committee for an event, think about your opportunity to provide healthy options!

I should say I went to the gym in the hotel last night, and could do a number of the exercises from the RMH Wellness Center, including 30 minutes of running.  The machine said I worked off 300 calories – half of my sausage biscuit, I’m sure!

The best offense is a good defense…..which means bring food with you! Pack in your brief case or whatever, a couple of apples or other such fruit, a can of v8 (my personal favorite)…even a slice of good whole wheat bread in a ziplock or a Special K protein bar. Once you’ve figured out what is easy to pack and store, get a small supply and you’re ready for any meeting/conference,etc !

I would agree with Kathe, to be healthy one must be prepared! Almonds are one of my personal favorites. I keep a bag of them in my desk drawer at all times. A hand full is all you need. It will kill the hunger pain in no time flat!!!
How is that running treating you?
